Blackstar Nebulae & Space Regions — Cosmic Cloud Names, Descriptions & Lore
In the Blackstar Shooting Stars universe, nebulae and space regions are not just locations — they are living territories, ancient battlegrounds, and powerful characters in their own right. Each is grounded in real astronomical science and given an identity in the Blackstar world.
Carina
The Carina Nebula is one of the largest and brightest nebulae in the sky, spanning over 300 light-years and containing massive, luminous stars including the volatile Eta Carinae. It is an active stellar nursery producing some of the most extreme stars in the galaxy. In Blackstar, Carina is the forge — the birthplace of warriors, where the most powerful fighters in the cosmos are forged in the fires of stellar creation.
Tarantula
The Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud is the most luminous nebula in our galactic neighborhood, so large that if placed where the Orion Nebula sits, it would cast shadows on Earth. It is a region of furious star formation. In Blackstar, Tarantula is a vast, sprawling commander whose legs reach across the entire Cloud territory — a spider of light who traps enemies in webs of gravitational force.
Pillars
The Pillars of Creation are towering columns of interstellar gas and dust in the Eagle Nebula, made famous by the Hubble Space Telescope. Stars are being born within these pillars even as they are slowly eroded by the light of nearby hot stars. In Blackstar, Pillars is an ancient guardian of creation — towering, ancient, slowly being worn away by forces beyond their control, but still standing.
Orionix
The Orion Nebula is the closest stellar nursery to Earth, visible to the naked eye as the middle star in Orion's sword. It contains a cluster of newborn stars called the Trapezium whose radiation illuminates the whole nebula. In Blackstar, Orionix is the nursery warden — the keeper of all new star warriors, choosing which sparks of light become great fighters.
Crabstar
The Crab Nebula is the remnant of a supernova explosion observed in 1054 CE, one of the best-studied supernova remnants in the sky. At its center pulses the Crab Pulsar, a rapidly spinning neutron star. In Blackstar, Crabstar is a veteran reborn — a warrior who exploded in a legendary battle and came back as something faster, harder, and completely different from before.
Eaglecloud
The Eagle Nebula contains the famous Pillars of Creation and is itself a region of active star formation about 7,000 light-years away. It appears as a vast spread of wings. In Blackstar, Eaglecloud is the mother of all Eagle-class warriors — the great cosmic incubator whose wings shelter every new star-warrior being born in the system.
Veilshard
The Veil Nebula is the remnant of a supernova that exploded 10,000 to 20,000 years ago, leaving delicate filaments of glowing gas across an area larger than six full moons in the sky. In Blackstar, Veilshard is a shattered warrior — once a great whole, now a fragmented being whose scattered pieces still hold enormous power across vast distances.
Ringmist
The Ring Nebula in Lyra is a classic planetary nebula — a shell of ionized gas shed by a dying star, forming a beautiful glowing ring around the star's remnant. In Blackstar, Ringmist is a dying elder warrior whose departure created a beautiful defensive ring that protects the territory long after they are gone.
Helixdrift
The Helix Nebula is the closest planetary nebula to Earth, sometimes called the Eye of God for its appearance. It is a complex structure of concentric rings of gas shed by a dying star. In Blackstar, Helixdrift is the all-seeing eye of the nebula forces — a cosmic sentinel whose spiraling gaze misses nothing across vast reaches of space.
Lagoon
The Lagoon Nebula is a large bright emission nebula about 4,000 light-years away in Sagittarius, containing active star formation and visible to the naked eye. In Blackstar, Lagoon is a calm surface with hidden depths — a warrior who appears serene and approachable but conceals violent star-birth forces within.
Trifid
The Trifid Nebula is a unique object combining an emission nebula, a reflection nebula, and a dark nebula, split into three lobes by dark dust lanes. It sits 5,200 light-years away in Sagittarius. In Blackstar, Trifid is a three-natured warrior — each of their three forms operates independently and can split apart in battle to attack from multiple directions at once.
Rosette
The Rosette Nebula is a large circular nebula 5,000 light-years away in Monoceros, with a central open cluster whose radiation has blown a hole in the nebula's center. Its shape resembles a rose. In Blackstar, Rosette is the most beautiful warrior in the cosmos — used as a diplomatic force, their appearance disarms enemies long enough for the true attack to unfold.
Butterfly
The Butterfly Nebula (NGC 6302) is a bipolar planetary nebula with two lobes expanding in opposite directions at over 950,000 km/h, one of the most complex planetary nebulae known. In Blackstar, Butterfly is a transformation warrior — entering battle in one form and emerging from every conflict as something completely different and more powerful.
Catseye
The Cat's Eye Nebula is one of the most structurally complex planetary nebulae known, with concentric rings, jets, and arc-like features forming a stunning multipart structure. In Blackstar, Catseye is a precision hunter — their complex, layered vision sees through any deception, tracking enemies across multiple dimensions of the battlefield simultaneously.
Boomerang
The Boomerang Nebula is the coldest natural place in the universe at -272°C — colder than the cosmic background radiation. It is an outflowing cloud of gas around a dying star. In Blackstar, Boomerang is a cold-type warrior whose chilling power slows enemies to near-stillness — the coldest force in any battle, terrifying in their absolute icy calm.
Hourglass
The Hourglass Nebula has two nearly symmetrical lobes pinched at the center, creating a striking hourglass shape. In Blackstar, Hourglass is the timekeeper of the cosmic forces — a warrior who controls the pacing of battle, accelerating or slowing time around enemies with devastating effect.
Bubblecrest
The Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635) is a sphere of ionized gas 10 light-years across blown around a massive O-class star by its stellar wind. In Blackstar, Bubblecrest is a shield-class warrior who projects enormous force bubbles around allied forces, protecting entire armies with their expanding energy shells.
Flamewing
Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) sits just east of Alnitak in Orion's Belt, a region of glowing gas where UV light from Alnitak ionizes surrounding hydrogen clouds into brilliant flame shapes. In Blackstar, Flamewing is Orion's fire-support warrior — a burning presence always close to the Belt stars, lighting up the battlefield for Orion's armies.
Horsehead
The Horsehead Nebula is a famous dark nebula silhouetted against a bright emission nebula in Orion, one of the most photographed objects in astronomy. In Blackstar, Horsehead is a shadow warrior who rides through battles unseen — a dark presence that only becomes visible when backlit by an explosion of power behind them.
California
The California Nebula is a large emission nebula in Perseus named for its resemblance to the state of California in outline, stretching over 100 light-years long. In Blackstar, California is a boundary warrior — defining the edge of Perseus's territory and defending the long coastline of cosmic cloud against incursion.
Pelican
The Pelican Nebula sits near the North America Nebula in Cygnus, a complex region of ionized gas where stellar winds and radiation are actively shaping new stars. In Blackstar, Pelican is a feeding warrior — always scooping up enemy resources and energy, growing stronger by absorbing what others discard.
Whirlpool
The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) is a grand-design spiral galaxy 23 million light-years away, interacting with its companion galaxy NGC 5195 in a gravitational dance that has shaped its spiral arms. In Blackstar, Whirlpool is a vortex warrior who pulls enemies into a spinning trap, drawing them to the center where they are crushed and absorbed.
Sculptor
The Sculptor Galaxy is a nearby spiral galaxy 11 million light-years away, one of the nearest galaxies to the Local Group, with an active nucleus suggesting a central black hole. In Blackstar, Sculptor is an architect warrior who reshapes the cosmic battlefield — carving new territories and remodeling the structure of space around the conflict.
Dorado
Dorado is a southern constellation containing the Large Magellanic Cloud, one of the Milky Way's nearest satellite galaxies, visible to the naked eye from the southern hemisphere. In Blackstar, Dorado is a vast territorial warrior who commands an entire satellite galaxy — their resources and forces dwarf those of any constellation-sized fighter.
Thorhelm
Thor's Helmet Nebula (NGC 2359) is a bubble-shaped nebula shaped by the stellar wind from a Wolf-Rayet star, with extensions that form a helmet-like shape. In Blackstar, Thorhelm is a helmet-class war leader — their power radiates in all directions like an explosive stellar wind, and their very presence changes the conditions of any battle they enter.
