Blackstar Planets & Moons Characters — Space World Names & Descriptions
From the rocky inner worlds to the icy moons of the outer solar system, every planet and moon in the Blackstar universe is a warrior, a territory, or a force. Explore their real astronomical identities and their roles in the Blackstar Shooting Stars webcomic.
Mercury
Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system and the closest to the Sun, completing an orbit in just 88 Earth days. Its surface reaches 430°C in sunlight and drops to -180°C in darkness. In Blackstar, Mercury is a lightning-fast messenger warrior who moves between factions carrying secret intelligence.
Venus
Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system despite not being closest to the Sun, thanks to a runaway greenhouse atmosphere of carbon dioxide reaching 465°C. It rotates backwards compared to most planets. In Blackstar, Venus is a deceptively beautiful warrior whose outer grace conceals a burning, suffocating intensity within.
Mars
Mars is the Red Planet, a cold desert world with the tallest volcano and largest canyon in the solar system. It has two tiny moons, Phobos and Deimos. In Blackstar, Mars is a red-armored war general whose aggressive tactics and iron will make them one of the most feared commanders in the cosmos.
Jupiter
Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system, a gas giant so massive it has more mass than all other planets combined. Its Great Red Spot is a storm larger than Earth that has raged for centuries. In Blackstar, Jupiter is the colossus of the planet warriors — too massive to stop, his Great Storm attack engulfs entire star fleets.
Saturn
Saturn is the ringed jewel of the solar system, a gas giant whose spectacular rings are made of ice and rock. It is the least dense planet — it would float on water. In Blackstar, Saturn is a ring-wielding warrior of supreme elegance who uses Saturn's Rings as weapons that slice through anything in their path.
Uranus
Uranus is an ice giant that rotates on its side with an axial tilt of 98 degrees, meaning it rolls around the Sun like a ball. Its 27 known moons are all named after Shakespeare characters. In Blackstar, Uranus fights from angles no one expects — sideways, upside-down, attacking from positions that break every rule of combat.
Neptune
Neptune is the windiest planet in the solar system, with storms reaching 2,100 km/h — faster than the speed of sound on Earth. It was the first planet predicted mathematically before being observed. In Blackstar, Neptune is a tempest warrior whose rage was calculated and predicted but still impossible to withstand when it arrives.
Pluto
Pluto is a dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, once considered the ninth planet, with a heart-shaped plain of nitrogen ice on its surface. It has five known moons including the large companion Charon. In Blackstar, Pluto is a warrior stripped of their former title — fighting in exile, carrying a deep longing to reclaim their place among the planets.
Titan
Titan is Saturn's largest moon and the only moon in the solar system with a dense atmosphere and liquid lakes on its surface — though filled with liquid methane, not water. It is considered one of the most likely places for life beyond Earth. In Blackstar, Titan is Saturn's most powerful general — mysterious, shrouded in haze, with hidden depths that surprise any enemy who underestimates them.
Europa
Europa is Jupiter's fourth-largest moon, covered in a smooth shell of water ice with a vast liquid ocean beneath, possibly harboring life. It has one of the smoothest surfaces in the solar system. In Blackstar, Europa is a sleek, swift fighter who conceals a hidden ocean of power beneath a calm, unreadable surface.
Ganymede
Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system, bigger than the planet Mercury, with its own magnetic field — a rare trait for a moon. It orbits Jupiter. In Blackstar, Ganymede is Jupiter's champion — the biggest and strongest of all moon warriors, wielding a magnetic field that redirects enemy energy attacks.
Callisto
Callisto is the most heavily cratered object in the solar system, an ancient moon of Jupiter that has barely changed in billions of years. It is the outermost of Jupiter's four Galilean moons. In Blackstar, Callisto is the scarred veteran — every battle leaves a mark, but nothing breaks them. Their experience is written across their body in battle wounds.
Io
Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system, with hundreds of volcanoes and lava lakes covering its surface. Jupiter's gravity constantly squeezes and heats it. In Blackstar, Io is Jupiter's explosive enforcer — a volcanic berserker who is always erupting with power and impossible to cool down once unleashed.
Triton
Triton is Neptune's largest moon and the only large moon in the solar system that orbits in the opposite direction of its planet's rotation. It is slowly spiraling inward and will eventually be torn apart. In Blackstar, Triton is a rebel moon warrior who moves against every current — fighting on their own terms, even knowing time is running out.
Phobos
Phobos is the larger of Mars's two tiny moons, orbiting so close and fast that it rises in the west and sets in the east. It is slowly being pulled toward Mars and will crash or break apart in about 50 million years. In Blackstar, Phobos is Mars's shadow warrior — moving faster than anyone expects, always circling closer to the heart of the action.
Deimos
Deimos is the smaller, outer moon of Mars, so small and distant it looks like a bright star from the Martian surface. Its name means "dread" in Greek. In Blackstar, Deimos is the dread agent of Mars — silent, small, easy to overlook, but spreading fear wherever they appear.
Charon
Charon is Pluto's largest moon, so big relative to Pluto that they are often called a double dwarf planet system — they orbit a shared center of gravity between them. In Blackstar, Charon is Pluto's inseparable companion in exile — the loyal partner who chose to follow Pluto into the Kuiper Belt rather than remain with the powerful planets.
Enceladus
Enceladus is a small moon of Saturn that shoots enormous geysers of water vapor and ice from its south pole into space, feeding Saturn's E ring. A liquid ocean lies beneath its surface. In Blackstar, Enceladus is Saturn's geyser warrior — launching powerful jets of energy that reach far beyond their small size suggests is possible.
Eris
Eris is the most massive dwarf planet known, slightly smaller in volume than Pluto but more dense and more massive. Its discovery in 2005 triggered the reclassification of Pluto. In Blackstar, Eris is the disruptor — their arrival in the solar system changed everything, toppling an established warrior from the ranks and reshaping the entire power structure.
Ceres
Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt and a dwarf planet, making up about a third of the belt's total mass. It has bright spots on its surface that are salt deposits from ancient water. In Blackstar, Ceres is the queen of the belt — governing the vast asteroid territories between Mars and Jupiter with firm, ancient authority.
Makemake
Makemake is a dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt, one of the brightest trans-Neptunian objects and named after the creator god of the Rapa Nui people of Easter Island. In Blackstar, Makemake is a creator deity-class warrior — a builder of worlds who can terraform the battlefield itself.
Haumea
Haumea is a dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt with an extremely elongated shape — it spins so fast it has stretched into an egg-like form. It has two moons and a faint ring. In Blackstar, Haumea is a spinning, shape-shifting warrior whose rapid rotation makes them difficult to hit and unpredictable in attack patterns.
Oberon
Oberon is the outermost of Uranus's major moons, a heavily cratered world with ancient ice and rock. It is named after the king of the fairies in A Midsummer Night's Dream. In Blackstar, Oberon rules the outer ring of Uranus's moon forces — a dignified, regal warrior who commands loyalty from the far reaches of their planetary territory.
Titania
Titania is the largest of Uranus's 27 moons, a world of icy cliffs and canyons named after the queen of the fairies in Shakespeare. In Blackstar, Titania is Uranus's supreme queen — the most powerful of the Uranian moon warriors, with icy precision and a commanding presence that towers over the others.
Miranda
Miranda is the smallest of Uranus's round moons but has the most dramatic terrain — canyons up to 20 km deep that dwarf Earth's Grand Canyon. In Blackstar, Miranda is a small but extraordinary warrior whose inner terrain conceals depths of power that shock even veteran fighters.
Rhea
Rhea is Saturn's second-largest moon and may have a thin oxygen atmosphere — the second moon ever found with an oxygen-based atmosphere. In Blackstar, Rhea is Saturn's breath-keeper — the warrior who sustains the Saturnian forces by providing the air and energy that keeps them fighting.
Iapetus
Iapetus is Saturn's third-largest moon with a dramatic two-toned appearance — one hemisphere is jet black and the other gleaming white. A giant equatorial ridge circles its middle. In Blackstar, Iapetus is the warrior of duality — pure light on one side, absolute darkness on the other, switching between them in combat to confuse and overwhelm.
Hyperion
Hyperion is a sponge-shaped moon of Saturn with an extremely irregular, porous surface and chaotic, tumbling rotation — it spins with no predictable pattern. In Blackstar, Hyperion is a chaotic unpredictable warrior whose movements follow no pattern, making every attack completely impossible to anticipate.
